The Memorial Hospital at Craig

Dancing For:Moffat County Cancer Society
Craig, CO

On behalf of the staff at Memorial Hospital at Craig (TMH) I am proud to submit our first Pink Glove Dance Video. The inspiration for our video grew from our desire to demonstrate support for the members in our community struggling with breast cancer. Our charity, The Moffat County Cancer Society, is the local agency that provides financial assistance to residents diagnosed with cancer.

The song, Katy Perry’s “Part of Me,” is representational of the way our staff feels about the patients to whom we provide services. Our patients represent a pillar of strength. While their worlds may be turned upside down, no one can take away their “soul.”

Our video includes many of the departments that provide exceptional care for the patients who utilize our infusion services. The departments contributed their own unique touches to their portion of the dance. We look forward to sharing the video.

The women and men of the Medical Center came together just as others across the nation, to dance for a cure. Each one directly impacted by this horrible disease. Everyone had a story to tell about why they were here and for whom they were dancing. All willing to don blinged-out hats, boas, sunglasses and pink gloves to make a video for the world to see in hopes of raising awareness and finding a cure. Honoring a loved one lost to cancer, encouraging someone in the fight, paying homage to the caretakers, recognizing the healthcare providers and celebrating the survivors. All with the hope and prayer that our loved ones and the loved ones of people we don’t even know will never have to hear the words, “It’s cancer.” Why do we dance? We dance because we can! We dance for those who can’t! We dance for the CURE!!

As co-chairs of the Breast Health Task force of Southeastern Connecticut, we are actuely aware of the 2011 Komen Foundation report that Connecticut has the second highest rate of incidence and mortality of breast cancer in the nation. This prompted us to present the opportunity to participate in The Pink Glove Dance Competition to the leadership and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. The hospital staff and breast cancer survivors showed overwhelming enthusiasm and joyfully teamed up throughout the hospital to creatively dance with a show of pink-gloved hands in support of breast cancer research. Our participation allowed us another opportunity to increase awareness of breast cancer not only in our community and state, but also nationwide. Early detection and research WILL conquer this disease. We are proud to hold our pink-gloved hands high in the air and partner with you on this quest!

To tell the story of a breast cancer victim is not just to tell the story of one patient battling a devastating disease. Indeed, it is also to tell the story of the hospital staff that encourages, the family who comforts, the friends who reassure, and the community who supports. No one is left untouched by some aspect of breast cancer. As our Medelia Native and breast cancer survivor, Marnie, embarked on her flight, she was supported all the way from the hospital to Main Street where community members poured in to keep the dance going. Finally, she embraced fellow survivors who won the battle before her. Medelia Community Hospital & Clinic not only reminds victims, “You are not alone,” but goes on to show by action. We stand united as a resilient and dedicated network of individuals fighting for those we love. Together, we can beat this.

Located in Lafayette, Tennessee, is Macon County General hospital. We are a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital. Living in a rural Tennessee town, everybody knows everybody. Breast cancer and other cancers have touched the hearts and lives of our co-workers, friends, families, and community. MCGH’s video is DEDICATED to all the GIRLS and to the causes that matter most to them. This video is to encourage GIRLS to live their life to the fullest and to show forth their (SPA) a “Super positive attitude.”- Every GIRL and woman should have the tools or resources that supply them with the opportunity to be the most successful. Have faith, have fun and then that SPA (super positive attitude) which is so important! All little girls, big girls, and older girls should be reminded every day that they are truly beautiful- no matter what age they are, we all have a little girl inside of us. The Beauty that is within us is the single most important trait that makes us special and stand out from the rest of the world. Each morning that we awaken, we need to thank God for another day, it’s like a gift that we have received. We have the choice to make Life- what is is, enjoy it, and to “Give Back” to the rest of the world! All of us need self-esteem and worth, but sometimes it doesn’t come naturally. We need to feel good about ourselves. Healthy self-esteem is like having a body guard at all times. It helps you fight the challenges and those daily stressors that you face each day in your life. You have to know your strengths and weaknesses and work with them, and honestly feel good about yourself. Parents, teachers, and friends can all promote healthy self-esteem by readily giving that “pat on the back.”

Our desired outcome was to celebrate survivors of breast cancer, raise awareness of the continued need for research, and of course DANCE with purpose. In our video you will see one continuous survivor in a hot pink sash. Her name is Pam and she represents all survivors. She was our inspiration to dance and get others to join in. We brought the dance to our home town baseball team for a night called Pack the Park Pink. Pam sang God Bless America and released over 150 pink balloons. After the game, fans in the stands danced in pink gloves along with survivors and caregivers in the infield. They then did the countdown to Pink Fireworks. We taped over 30 locations throughout our system, received radio coverage, and printed media coverage celebrating our excitement for the contest. We are thankful for the opportunity to dance with Medline’s PINK GLOVES ON!

In addition, we have a growing group of female veterans that we serve, some whom have or will face breast cancer in their lives. This video is to honor all of them.

Our idea for the McGlinn Family Regional Cancer center was inspired by a community event we hosted this year for breast cancer survivors. We wanted to dance but at the same time we wanted to include survivors in our video. As the breast cancer nurse navigator here at the hospital I was able to talk to survivors to see if this was something they were interested in, and we had an overwhelming response for participation. From there we created a story using our image recovery center to start our video. We used the Katy Perry song, "Part of Me", we asked the women to send us pictures of a special time in their lives. We incorporated this into the song that cancer can NOT take that part away from them and that's how our video came to be.

The original PGD video on a morning talk show sparked my interested as a tremendous opportunity for our hospital to raise awareness for a serious cause in a fun and exciting way. The excitement spread throughout our facility and quickly overflowed into our community. Other than dancers, hospital employees also served in the rolls of producer, director, videographer, and choreographers. A staff member even incorporated our own LMH logo for a PGD shirt worn by dancers throughout the video. Although we could list numerous motives why our healthcare team members wanted to participate in the PGD video competition, it all comes down to one specific inspiration: Laughlin Memorial Hospital wishes to promote breast Cancer Awareness for the most important people we know…… Our Patients and our Community’s Residents!

Marshall County Hospital is a 25- bed critical access hospital, located in Benton, Kentucky. We provide first-rate health care, in a small community, where we know our patients by name and truly care about their outcome. Our hospital has approximately 200 employees, several of which happen to be cancer survivors. We have support each one emotionally and sometimes financially during their hardships. In our Pink Glove Video, we have attempted and hopefully succeeded, in showing their journey, all the way from registration and receive their bad new to becoming a cancer-free survivor! Our video depicts the fact that cancer can be inside us, unknowingly, for years. When detected, “cancer” is always on our mind and lurking in the background but eventually loses its battle and turns into healthy, cancer-free cells.

At Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), we believe treatment should be delivered from a compassionate, dedicated team of health care providers who treat patients and not just the disease. In our video we wanted to show all the different areas of cancer care at LLUMC- from nurses, administration, researchers, physicians and even the construction workers building a new clinic…everyone here has a part in our patients’ journey and are committed to finding a cure for cancer. We also made sure to highlight our Children’s Hospital because although they may not be fighting breast cancer, they are still fighting and it takes a special team to care for these young patients. Throughout the video you will see signs that say “This One’s For…” we asked people throughout the cancer center (including some patients) to say who they are fighting for or who this video is for and those signs are the answers.

And what better way to accomplish that then to have some fun and dance!

Inspiration to create a Pink Glove Dance Video is in our DNA at The Central Georgia Breast Care Center. An NAPBC accredited and Breast Care Center of Excellence we have offered one-stop shopping for screenings, breast health education, diagnosis, treatment, genetic and nutrition counseling, and outreach. Three Octobers ago we launched an annual “Paint the Town Pink” campaign to creatively engage our community in breast cancer awareness- a perfect fit for Macon which hosts the annual Cherry Blossom Festival each March and boasts more Yoshino cherry trees than Washington D.C. When our Medline rep told us about the Pink Glove Dance contest, we were tickled pink, and the enthusiasm was contagious. This video, opened and closed by Medical Director James Cunningham, M.D. reflects capers by our Foundation, Administration, Residents, Nursing Staff, Hospice, Rehabilitation, and most importantly, Survivors who life our hears and keep dance in our feet.

The impact of the original video among healthcare workers, breast cancer survivors and their families and friends was enormous. Once we saw the original video, we immediately wanted to get involved to help make a difference at Memorial. Increasing awareness of breast cancer and prevention is a paramount of overall women’s health and wellness. While 1 out of every 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, we know that the earlier the disease is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome. Memorial Healthcare’s staff participation was awe-inspiring. Following a patient centered approach to each and every patient; the staff and leadership understand the importance of the Pink Glove Dance video will bring to women in our community and across the country. Participating in the video provided the organization with real satisfaction in knowing that awareness and discussion has been created about breast cancer.

Just has she has for the past five years, Kathy, our Patient Services Secretary and breast cancer survivor, asked with bated breath ”is this the year we will do the Pink Glove Dance?” She has survived breast cancer twice. She has risen to the occasion with grace. In years past when the busyness of work got in the way of putting together the Pink Glove Dance, she waited patiently. She has been persistent, asking each year about the dance and reminding us about the important role Ministry Home care plays in the care of those affected by breast cancer. This is our year and Kathy is our inspiration. Our care setting is special, it is home. Seasons of Life Hospice House represents all the homes we visit in our beautiful Wisconsin Northwoods. An extraordinary spirit resonates throughout the hallways and hearts of our Memorial Hermann the Woodlands Hospital family, creating a loving, supportive culture we call “Magnet Moments.” The idea for our participation in the Pink Glove Dance originated from our very own direct care nurse, Linda Jones. A breast cancer survivor herself, she thought she this project could provide a unique opportunity to highlight Breast Cancer awareness to show support for fellow employees facing the challenges of breast cancer, and to celebrate our many breast cancer survivors. All departments were invited to dust of their boogie shoes, have some fun and get creative. Some 27 departments, including breast cancer survivors and former patients, volunteered to participate in this project. From Surgical Services’ dancing Da Vinci robot to the glowing dancer from the Breast and Bone Center, everyone incorporated their unit’s personality and vision into their portion of the final video.

The dedicated employees at Lakeview Regional Medical Center created our Pink Glove video with a vibrant Louisiana flavor. Our video contains such New Orleans and South Louisiana traditions as a Mari Gras parade, pink alligators, crawfish and pink handkerchiefs used by out “stars” to sashay and second line as they dance and sing. Out community is north of New Orleans on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. Although our area has had many natural and environmental challenges over the last seven years, we continue to grow, thrive and foster our traditions and unique way of life. It is our hope that on a national website such as yours, our video will demonstrate that here in South Louisiana we are “alive and kicking” and reading to take on the challenge of helping maintain funding for breast cancer research in the greater New Orleans area. And, always remember, “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” (Let the good times roll!)

Our video was inspired by the idea of a “Day in the Life of Hope,” covering an entire day at Mercy Memorial Hospital System, from physicians and nurses to maintenance staff. A large part of our success, and the hope we give to breast cancer patients, is our dedicated staff. This starts at the top with our president who, like all other administration, rounds daily on patients. It extends to all other employees- some of whom were so excited that they came in during their time off to practice their dance video routines together. Of course, some of our favorite dance routines were the result of spontaneous moves from the staff members who claimed (unconvincingly) that they didn’t have rhythm. We were also happy that during our one marathon filming day, we could feature several of our survivors, who inspire us and help to make hope possible- every day.

As a National Cancer Institute designated hospital, the Medical University of South Carolina is dedicated to saving lives through quality, and compassionate care. Our staff, researchers and clinicians continually push the boundaries to find cures and better treatments for our patients. Part of that involves raising awareness and boosting morale, which is why we chose to film the Medline Pink Glove Video. The video features more than 200 employees representing more than 10 departments including satellite offices in our institution. We had no problems getting participants, with staff enjoying an active, creative way to show their support. Some came out in memory or celebration of a loved one and others just to support a good cause. Participants ranged from Drummer, one of our pet therapy dogs, to members of a Dragon Boat team whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. The video is yet one more way MUSC employees can show how much we care and are changing what’s possible for those affected by breast cancer.

This month, our employees, physicians, and survivors came together to film the Pink Glove Dance video. We were inspired by our PATIENTS to do this video as we would like the world to see and understand that breast cancer is more than just a physical struggle. We chose the song by Katy Perry, “Part of Me” because there are so many emotional hurdles survivors must face. Their hope, strength, support, courage, and love are tested. We want our video to share the message that cancer cannot take away any of those things; it cannot take away your soul. Our patients prove this by using their soul to fight this disease; by telling breast cancer “This is the part of me that you’re never ever gonna take away from me!” As you can see in our video, the soul is always present in the fight!

Employees from across Loyola University Health System came together to participate in the filming of the Pink Glove Video to raise awareness for breast cancer. While planning for the video, staff began talking about how everyone knows someone who has been impacted by breast cancer. As a result, each person danced for those they know who have been personally touched by breast cancer. These people – our mothers, our daughters, our aunts, our friends, our patients, ourselves – were the inspiration for our video and they are noted in signs, which appear throughout the piece. If Loyola is selected as the winner, the organization will put the funding toward breast cancer research at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine’s Oncology Institute. The Oncology Institute supports basic science research in cancer and provides the structure to coordinate and integrate a truly multidisciplinary approach to cancer research and clinical care.

The benefits received from Middletown Park’s participation in Medline’s Pink Glove Contest proved to go way beyond our initial rational for entering. The challenge with planning, working together as a team and staying within budget to produce a show-stopping, winning video for a great cause was our primary motivation. We wanted to promote hope, encouragement and prevention as we united women of all ages including some currently in treatment as well as true survivors. We felt proud of the outcome; however we never knew how greatly our presentation would affect us on personal levels. Memories of friends, family and patients who either lost their battles with breast cancer or those who triumphed despite the odds created sadness and joyous reflections respectively. Many of us feel that our lives have been changed; this experience opened our hearts and allowed us to truly put our lives into perspective.

Each October, we honor and celebrate our patients and staff that have been markedly touched by this disease. The work of healthcare is often serious. We deliver painful news and support families through grueling times. We understand how important hope is, and giving is, and in this spirit we came together for the Pink Glove Dance – and our entry is a celebration. We turned any angst and worry into movement and lighthearted, yet heartfelt fun. Each autumn, we give to an organization that improves the quality of life and advances core research. The Pink Glove Dance provides an opportunity for us to give back and to give more.

It was amazing to see everyone participate and work together to show their support of our first grade teacher! Being able to support my mom and my friend has meant the world to me. Win or lose- it's a big win for our community and we can only hope to donate $10,000 on Lakeside's behalf to the Susan G. Komen foundation!

Momentum Academy Dance wanted to bring something to our Community to help our local Relay For Life. After seeing an ad for the Pink Glove Dance, we realized that this was perfect for us to help raise awareness and raise funds for Relay For Life. We advertized in local papers, online news and Facebook. Tables were set-up for donations for Relay of Life during learning the dance with cups & t-shirts. Dancers who had loved ones affected by cancer painted who they were dancing for on the back of their shirts. We had parents, survivors and children ages 5 & up dancing to help our local Relay For Life, dancing for their loved ones, bringing awareness to breast cancer in our community. A memorial wall was set up along with pink balloons that were written with names of those who we wanted to remember that were released at the end.

The employees of Lake City Medical Center are thrilled to participate in the Pink Glove Dance. We know that breast cancer is a serious subject, but we wanted to have fun with our dance. So, we decided on the theme of ""Don't Monkey Around with Breast Cancer. Knock it Out!"" To really drive the theme home, we had a pink gorilla dancing throughout our video and different people with pink boxing gloves ""knocking him out"". No matter where that pink gorilla popped up, our employees were ready to take him on. And we did it while proudly showing off our pink gloves. The spirit of our employees really came through in this video and we hope our dancing skills will promote breast cancer awareness in the Lake City community.

Mammoth Hospital danced to “This Ones for the Girls” in celebration of saving lives and to help raise breast cancer awareness. An initiative supported by the hospital staff focuses on the underserved of the Eastern Sierra. “We are all the same inside” and deserve “same” treatment without financial barriers. Winning money will be donated to The Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance that financially assists local cancer patients and survivors in order to receive ongoing cancer care. Due to living in a rural community, many local cancer patients travel out of the area for care because primary oncology care does not exist. Travel costs can contribute to lack of care because of the financial burden. In the film, Mammoth hospital CEO inspires Cancer Outreach Nurse Coordinator and breast cancer survivor to promote equality for good health by getting all hospital staff onboard.

Mt. St. Joseph Hospital (MSJ) is a 100-bed acute care, community hospital that is a significant part of Providence Health Care, in Vancouver, British Colombia (BC). MSJ is the provincial leader in breast cancer rapid access to diagnosis, treatment, surgery, reconstruction and post-operative care. Our entry to the Pink Glove Dance contest was inspired by the need of a second digital mammography machine for the hospital so that our patients can continue to access care and treatment within a three-week timeframe. Currently, we are struggling to ensure our one digital mammography machine remains operational as any delay in diagnosis is potentially fatal. As the video shows, the entire hospital and leadership team willingly donned pink gloves and danced their hearts out to support this campaign. The huge smile on each face shoes the spirit of our hospital. The following week staff asked, “Can’t we do this dance every week?!”

Often times, we are the first line of care for patients in our rural South Lafourche community. Our friendly admissions department is the first impression that our patients form of our facility. Outpatient services, including mammography, lab, and respiratory, all may be utilizes during that one patient’s visit. Our compassionate surgery team goes above and beyond to make sure each patient is comfortable during the anxious time of diagnosis in her life. Many departments work “behind the scenes” ensuring a patient’s safety and comfort during her stay: maintenance safeguarding machinery, housekeeping warranting infection control procedures, and dietary delivering a warm meal and a smile to a patient recovering, just to name a few. This team effort encourages our mission statement: providing high quality healthcare in a personalized manner to those we serve.

During the last few years, three colleagues in our academic division were diagnosed with breast cancer. We are a close group, so this has been a traumatic experience for all of us. We have cried together, prayed together, celebrated together and helped in any way that we could. A few of us had seen previous videos and thought it would be a way to honor our colleagues. Our college president totally supported our effort. While dancing our way across the campus, we discovered seven other women and one man who were survivors of breast cancer. Our video is to celebrate their recovery and to fully participate in the search for a cure to breast cancer.

For the last seven years, Memorial Care Medical Group has been a proud sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Orange County Affiliate Race for the Cure. This year, we thought we would have a little fun at our booth and shoot our own Pink Glove Dance Video. Armed with an amateur video camera, a box of pink gloves and a bin of fun props we invited breast cancer survivors, their family, friends and all supporters to show us their best dance moves and star in our video. Memorial Care Medical Group is proud to be part of the Memorial Care Health System family. Memorial Care Breast Centers are among the most comprehensive breast centers in Long Beach and Orange County, California. Memorial Care performs thousands of mammograms every year. Our caring and compassionate physicians and staff are solely dedicated to the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. We have not had anyone in our families that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, we have had family members with other various cancers. No matter the cancer, it is always a hard battle to fight. We all felt for our family members that have passed due to different forms of cancer and we would have felt that way should they have had breast cancer. We need to continue to look for cures for cancer. Breast cancer can be diagnosed early and treated. This little dance we have done is more like a celebration for all of those women who have beat breast cancer, inspiration for those who are in the midst of beating it and remembrance for those who have passed on and are in a better place. So that would be our inspiration, women with breast cancer and the people fighting to find a cure. The fight for finding a cure for breast cancer and every other form of cancer is hard one, but it is one we are willing to continue to battle and are determined to win.
